Vela began in Michigan in 2007 as a collaboration between lab scientists and a team of local print and bindery experts, with the common goal to produce smarter, better lab notebooks AND produce them sustainably in the United States. Through grants and the support of friends and Kickstarter backers, we produced our first small batch of lab notebooks for our lab and friends. Years of refining later, we now represent a major source of lab and field notebooks across the U.S.

Every Vela product is manufactured right here in the United States. Local production not only gives us the chance to support local, fair wage tradesmen and women, but it also provides more consistent, higher quality printing and binding, with more efficient distribution.

We are also always working to find the most sustainable materials and manufacturing techniques. From American-sourced cloths, soy-based inks, 100% PCW book boards, using FSC and SFI certified papers, to recycling or repurposing every scrap of material—we are committed to sustainable practices. For more details please reference our materials guide or materials specifications on each product page.

As former science students, we know how challenging it can be learning the complicated and often varying standards for maintaining a laboratory notebook.  Part of our mission is to make teaching and learning these standards as efficient and easy as possible. To help in this process, we are generating a growing library of user guides and teaching aids, free for all to use. We hope to continue to keep growing and refining this library, so keep checking back for more and more free resources!
